Featuring Dramatic Acrylics, Metallics and Kitschy Adornments.

New York Fashion Week's Spring 2023 shows have drawn attention for surprise runway appearances and coveted collaborations — and also because they've displayed some of the most decked-out nails we've seen in a while. Madam Glam was a part of LUAR Fashion Show together with Nail Artist Naomi Yasuda!
For as long as she can remember, Naomi Yasuda (@naominailsnyc) has been fascinated with art. A native of Japan, after graduating, Naomi packed her bags and headed to New York City, where nails became her canvas.

The show was inspired by the looks Raul Lopez’s Dominican aunts used to turn up to family gatherings in. Classic 80s updos were given to models, while for make-up it was all about eyeshadows in rich purples with dramatic wings and black glossy lips. Make-up artist Romero Jennings also bleached eyebrows, while Naomi Yasuda on nails gave models perfect acrylic sets with Luar pinkies.

On the long list of things that Fashion Week show-goers pay attention to when a model is walking down the runway, the painted nails on the hands of every model surely falls somewhere behind the soundtrack, scenery, hair, makeup, and, you know, the actual clothes. But even with this a given, New York City-based nail artist Naomi, doesn't take her job any less seriously — viewing it as a true extension of the collections her work supports, not just an afterthought to it. And rightfully so, considering that her nail designs, be it a delicately painted scene or a  three-dimensional mini-sculpture, are true works of art.

MG: Thank you for taking us with you at NYFW ! How would you describe the show?
Innovative, exciting, the future of fashion!
MG: We are super honored you picked our glamorous gel polishes for your looks! What did you love most about them?
I love Madam Glam gel polishes sooo much! They are very pigmented and I also love the consistency and how it glides over the nail plate when you apply them!
MG: What is the process of doing nails for a major fashion show? Do you always get inspiration from the collection, or is it more of a collaborative process with the designer?
Well, I usually bring a sketchbook and draw some ideas after collaborating with the designer. Then, we narrow down the designs, do some edits and I create a few sample nails based on the design we choose and try on the model.
MG: How do you see Nail Art evolving as it becomes more mainstream?
I see Nail Art becoming more accessible to a lot of people as well as people who normally don’t wear Nail Art. ’ve been also noticed a lot more men wearing Nail Art as well, which I think is very exciting!
MG: How would you define your nail art aesthetic, before involving collaborator influence?
I feel that Nail Art is very inclusive. I always keep in mind the people, the culture and the aesthetic while I’m creating the look. I’m also aware who and what I’m creating the nails for. I use that as a guide when I get started.
